Kaleb has cerebral palsy and at four years old, can't yet walk, but is eventually expected to have some assisted walking ability. He has a limited ability to understand and follow instructions, but he rapidly understood that he was the new owner of a BMW, and was already making efforts to take the wheel. Just a few weeks later, he was steering and accelerating over short distantces as his parents encouraged him to develop the independent driving skills that will increase his enjoyment of the car and his ability to keep up with other kids.
AND IMMEDIATELY HE HAS A FIRM HOLD ON THAT DOOR, READY TO GET IN. THESE BIGGER CARS ARE FITTED OUT FOR FOUR- TO SEVEN-YEAR-OLDS (DEPENDING ON SIZE)
GEOFF HAS BUILT THE BASICS IN ADVANCE, NOW MUM HELPS MARK AND MURRAY CHECK THE HARNESS FITS AND CONFIRM THAT KALEB CAN REACH THE CONTROLS
KALEB CAN SIT UP UNASSISTED, SO NOW HE GETS A LITTLE TIME TO GET USED TO THE CAR AND ITS SOUNDTRACK, AND AIM TO GRASP THOSE STEERING HANDLES
FOR HANDOVER DAY, WE USED THE REMOTE TO DRIVE AND STEER, BUT MUM'S CONFIDENT KALEB WILL SOON START STEERING, AND USING THE THROTTLE, ON HIS OWN
